As someone who definitely prefer the strategic, technical events, I don't mind the mechanics of this event. We're just coming off St Pat, so something less complicated is fine, and being the 10th anniversary event I think it makes sense that it's simple, making it more accessible to most players.
My issue is that despite it being simple, you actually have to play a given way to get the main building fully leveled in the event's current state. That's not obvious for casual players, so I fear many will be stuck with a level 8 or 9 building, even if they have the surprise box. Most events you're able to get the main building fully leveled whatever your playstyle if you have the surprise box, if you don't you sometime have to make choices (which of the three options you pick), but you can play whenever you want. Currently, you're forced to play daily (or at least over many days), because the daily goal rewards are required unless you get lucky.
That's another issue, while there usually are some elements of luck in terms of grand prizes, there is nothing to the level you have here. Below is a graph of the distribution of tiles with 9000 paper money (1k from incidents) and 6 golden dice rolls. The two lines are the number of tiles you need to get enough upgrade kits for the Orrery, the first one if you have the surprise box, the second one if you don't have it. As you can see you need luck if you have the surprise box, without it you definitely won't get it.

And even if you do play for the daily goal each day, and get an additional 10 golden dice from playing (and assuming all of them are worth 6 tiles, which is a stretch), you still need luck if you don't have the surprise box:

All this is to say, I think the event mechanics are alright (nothing special though), but the amount of currency you have is too little, especially considering the huge variance of number of tiles you can progress with the same amount of currency.
