just wondered why the game designers decided to go for a romano grecco town hall for the iron age rather then an iron age building?

Because the iron age period in which the game depicts is more an era which the Roman influence still was around in Europe even though the empire was long gone. The Romans were the height of culture and society and they were copied heavily.

i believe the game is more European based and the iron age era is to describe Europe before the middle ages, so anything pre 1300's ish
An example of this is the Aqueduct decoration unlock in the Iron Age, thats Roman.

you only have to look at the tools and weapons iron tools and swords were used in the iron age romans used steels tools and blades which was the next tecnological advance and date wise the iron age in mainland europe started in 1200 BC rome wasn't even founded to 753 BC by romulus a clear 450 years AFTER the start of the iron age and roma (the original name for rome) didn't even conquer the whole of italy until 295 BC so 900 years after the start of the iron age. and if you really wanted to go into a huge amount of details the game designers are german and the germanic tribes were not involved with the romans until 113 BC when the germanic tribes Cimbri and Teutones invaded spain and gaul and attacked the romans which is now over a thousand years after the start of the iron age and its not until 55 BC that Caesar fights German tribes and crosses the Rhine.
so i will agree that roman and ironage were running at the same time in different parts but iron age predates rome by a long time and you certainly wouldn't have a romano-grecco building in somewhere where the iron age was still valid for that influence they would have to have been conqured by the romans and therefore would have been a romanic period and not an iron age period and the building certainly wouldn't be left as a something left behind as stated above.

Technologically speaking, and in reality, you may be correct; but reality in a game is not often exact.

This is correct, most of europe was still in awe of the buildings the Romans put together and even though the civilisation was clearly gone at that stage the buildings were not.
