A general rule is the later the age, the better the troops, mercenaries for example would thrash spear men, but comparing between unit types eg: Spear men and warriors is pointless both have advantages and disadvantages and in the hands of a skilled general could upset any predictions anyone could state no matter how confidently they state it.

I myself would hold of from both and only use slinger until you can get stone throwers.
