Okay, I've only been in the game about 2.5 yrs.. but every era seems the same.. bump up att\def, battle in GBG, move when you can easily complete lvl iV in GE.. Does the introduction of special goods (AF and onwards) make it interesting again??

Interesting? Well, they bring something new to do, upgrade crew members, send ships to gather the special goods.

But mainly: Higher Research costs, painful to produce at the hubs, waste goods to upgrade the crew to get better production => Slow down progress.

If you're getting bored with the game, this won't help.
Otherwise it adds a new wrinkle to the goods system making a little more complex. Also the special goods can't be doubled up on - you get one harbor and can't build more. You also can't trade for special goods. Since many of the technologies require special goods and there are more technologies to research, it takes longer to do them all.
