How to obtain Colonial units while in LMA era?

Hoping someone can provide some info/guidance. I am wondering how a player in LMA (has a LMA Townhall in their city), but uses Colonial Units in battle. This was news for me. It has been my understanding player had to be in the Colonial era (with a Colonial Townhall) and complete the reuqirement for those units in the Tech Tree, to have access to Colonial units. This player does own a Traz. I was attacked by a player with a LMA (Townhall). When I went to retaliate, the player had some Colonial units. I would like to know how this can be done, as I did not know it was possible. It sure would up my game, if I knew how I could gain access to Colonial era units, while in LMA. Any information could be useful for me. Thanks for your help.

You can get units above your age if you get ahead of your tech tree/town hall age on the continent map. TThere are quests that will reward you with them.
