The Soldier can cover half the map in basically a movement, making it impossible really to employ any kind of tactic against them except fight head on, nullifies the use of slingers basically because if you kill the soldiers the legionnaire's just dominate.

I've been trying to protect the slingers by placing other infantry in front of them as a kind of shield, so hopefully the slingers can get a couple of attacks in before it gets walloped, so far it usually results in a very close win or lose. 2 wins with 2 units left and 1 loss with the enemy having 1 unit left

My annoyance thing is severe lack of building space or the poor 4 x 4 land unlocks we get for research points, half of which I cannot unlock due to not having access to lumber or alabaster or diamonds etc, at least if these things get mentioned Innogames will take a look into it before the release.

I use the slingers to skirmish with the Legionaries from distance while my spears fight against the Soldiers... my plan is to then use the spears and warriors to keep the soldiers occupied while slingers range in... or just get soldiers so the soldiers can fight soldiers... I don't mind waiting a day for a good army to come together. XD

I actually win by just not moving all that much. I let the genius enemy AI draw in on me (staying out of furthest possible range for the slingers).
The AI tends to break up into groups, not covering the same amount of ground. Then I just move in on the closest group. Tends to work very well.

That tactic sure works well if AI doesnt have ballista... they are annoying as hell.

Hefty, have you read Sun Tzu's Art of War? Excellent book, and it drops quite a few hints on strategy... that and play some good Civilization or whatever other turn-based strategy games you know of... that will help you with the strategy part... there's a lot of very minor things that a good strategist can pick up on, such as moving one space less, even unconsciously, thus leading to victory. I don't count myself a very good strategist, but I've taken all but one part of Badakus using slingers and spears, and finally one warrior in this one battle.

Sun Tzu says things like "Never be the first to attack" and "Always have a clear way of retreat"... he also talks a LOT about terrain and the quality of the battlefield... some of it can be equated easily into the game.

Not got around to reading it yet and i was going to catch up on Civilisation before realising one had deleted the game and the files from my computer, not a wise move

I get annoyed by the many errors I get during battle... it always happens when fight is almost over, then bam your troops gone and enemy resets :(
