Rejected Suggestion for method to reorganize city

As you progress in ages and building sizes change, it is necessary to reroute roads and re-position buildings. But often to make significant change, it requires selling buildings to make space.

It would be nice to have a "city builder" mode where buildings and roads could be placed in a temporary storage space (which would be sortable by building size, so similar sized buildings could be aligned better and sorted by "no road", "1-lane" and "2-lane")

This mode should have a top down view to be able to see all the buildings, as often smaller items are obscured by larger ones in the normal 3D perspective of the game.

There is a city builder very popular where you can build your city, store it and remodel at your ease. I just use MS Excel.

Someone mentioned that in replying to an unrelated post. It is a clever application good for trying out ideas.

However it fails to meet the player's need in two ways:
1. You cannot save your changes back to the game.
2. In the game you still need to sell off buildings to create space to move things around.

An in game city builder should have a temporary storage location to put buildings to allow rerouting roads, etc. Once the player has placed all the buildings in the new layout, then the new layout can be saved. Otherwise the city would revert to its original layout.

Right now city reorganization is often only done when entering new ages as old buildings are replaced with new ones. And how often would we like to make a change but don't because we can't make the space for it yet. I feel like this would add a strategic element that would allow a player more freedom to experiment with different layouts whenever they want without worrying about which buildings are in the way.

One more thought:

In a game where you are often waiting for things to happen. This would be something you can do anytime while waiting. It seems like a good way to keep players playing and thinking about the game.

Numerous suggestions, ideas, proposals for a "temporary storage" or "holding" area has been submitted to the DEVs in the past years at the online forums (I visit frequently the EN and US forums). None have been implemented. The ideas would remove a challenge from the game making the remodeling of the city much easier.

Need space for remodeling?
1. Evaluate current buildings, sell old/obsolete ones that will be replaced by special buildings or buildings of the new era.
2. Keep decorations to the minimum, or zero.
3. Delete roads, push all things to a side, opening the space gained together, reposition buildings in the new layout, rebuild roads as needed. Roads are very cheap compared to everything else.

You may not need to sell all the roads, just enough to have some room to shift things around.

Also consider the building shapes for positioning at the city. For example, a 4x3 building will use less road pieces if the side facing the road is the shorter one (3) vs the longest one (4). Keep doing this consistently. and at the end your city will need less roads to connect everything. Less space used in roads means more space available for goods, military, production buildings, etc.

I agree. With the new reconstruction menu, it would be nice to sort by length or width for selecting buildings to place.
