Screen Settings on Win11

Tamari

Marquis
Laptop is mirrored to an external monitor and would like suggestions on optimal settings.

@Thunderdome you mentioned your settings in a more complex set-up: Both resolutions are at 100% zoom setting (Windows 11) as I had to set that manually since W11 sets it for the max zoom on its own. The laptop is running with the recommended 125% zoom while the external monitor is 175%. Zoom is overridden in the browser depending on site being viewed: Forum 150% & game at 110% unless taking screenshots of QI settlement with FoE Helper Town overview active and FLAT mode toggled.

QI Middle-Ages barely fits the screen and browser zoom needs to be sharply reduced to avoid extra fluff getting snagged in the Snip (screenshot).

Can supply screenshots of the monitor settings if it will help.

TIA

I use mine in a "Show Only on 2" environment since I cradled my laptop on a shelf below the desk with its cooling pad engaged, so the 4k resolution is at 100% scale ("zoom" if you will) set (initially, was at 300% which was way too big for my tastes).

I don't know what your resolution is set for both, but can do for 100% as sometimes recommended will make icons and everything else bigger in view. If you can, you may want to set up the external to match your 125% setting for the laptop, by first clicking on the 2 monitor identifier (laptop display will always be 1) and then selecting the scale % to 125%. The setting will be saved so when you unplug and plug it back in, it will stay the same.

My 4k environment is set for 100% as I can see the text to be read, so I can be doing other things at the same time. This is also good when I communicate with family across the country as I would reserve one corner for the video communications (Google Meet) and can have other things going at the same time without skipping a beat (aka going through tabs or windows, or even virtual desktops) since I can see them all (limited to the 4 corner viewing environment that is).

Anyways, if you have to change your settings in a mirrored environment, you will have to click on each monitor identifier individually so you know which one you will be working on setting up. 90% of the time it will apply the setting but will give you the option to revert back to the last known setting for the display (only in case if it doesn't look right to you). The only time I would go for "recommended" is when it deals with the resolution as it's probably the max value that can be supported without having problems. So, keep that in mind should you want to change resolution.

And on that note, make sure you know how far in the resolution for your laptop you can go; this can be accomplished in a non-docked state. If you set display 1 (laptop) for a resolution that exceeds its native resolution, not only will you have tiny items on the laptop screen but you will probably have graphic issues. I had done that once with a mirrored environment but reverted back since my laptop on its own can't do 4k resolution (recommended only shows 1920x1080 as the max). The HDMI port from my laptop can connect to a 4k setting, though.

4k and a TV. Best thing to happen since sliced bread.

Hoping this helps to gather an understanding before diving in...
