Dear Queens and Kings,

Quests are one of the central parts of Forge of Empires. They lead players through the game and determine their progress. The current system that we were using for the past five years has been great and worked well, but it had several restrictions that were always very limiting when it comes to what we could do with quests.
We sat down and thought about possible improvements to the way we show them and present them to you.
We came up with a new Quest Overview which should be able to display all of the needed information in an efficient way and provide the possibility for future expansion. You'll find our reasoning for the changes below!

This is what the new quest overview looks like, after it has been extended from the side of your screen:

As you can see, the left part of the screen is now less crowded with quests, because from now on different kinds of quests are grouped in tabs.

There were a couple of things we were aiming to achieve with the new Quests Overview:

Provide a better overview of quests and quest types
We wanted to introduce a chance for better distinction between quests and quest types. There are currently two main types of quests: normal quests, and event quests, and you can have a few different quests active within each of those categories at a time.
An example issue that we observed was that you would need to click open and closed a few quests to find the quest that you were actually trying to make progress on.
We also plan to soon introduce a third type of "quest", which makes it even more important to have the distinction and better overview.

Allow for more quests
There's a limited amount of space on the left side of the screen, and depending on your resolution, having 5 quests open at a time was already hiding certain other parts of the UI. The change to the tab-based view will allow for having more quests in progress at the same time. Again - something we'll be trying out soon.

Allow more quest conditions
We also wanted to have a UI that accommodates more than 2 quest conditions at a time. Again, we'll be trying out some of these soon.

All in all, the new quest window is designed to provide more information in the same space, so you can make your way through the quests in a more efficient manner.

Better visualization for event quests
There are also significant changes to how we show event quests. Firstly, there was the mild confusion that there were 2 event quests that looked the same, even though one of them was for counting progress in the actual questline. We've introduced a better overview for that with a progress bar that is visible when you view the main quest for the event.

Secondly, we've also now used the chance to integrate a much-more visible timer for when a questline will end. We've observed that players were often surprised when questlines (especially historical questlines) just disappeared one day, because they hadn't been aware of the runtime. This is particularly helpful in the mobile version, where there isn't a timer counting down in the main event button.

Thank you for playing Forge of Empires!

Sincerely,
Your Forge of Empires Team - Team Beta

P.S. - For now the new overview is only available on the browser version of the game.

So, we want to give everyone a quick update on what we are working on with the quest overview, and some of what we have done so far.

Currently we are working on:

  • Making the abort confirmation an optional setting that can be activated or deactivated (we will likely get this tomorrow here on Beta)
  • Making the next quest appear quicker on completion of the prior quest
  • Cleaning up the visuals on building rewards
  • Polishing text and banner graphics
  • Deactivated city tooltips when mousing over the quest tabs (coming tomorrow)
  • Fixed the condition text and hint text boxes that were overlapping in some cases (coming tomorrow)
  • Removing the reward banner on quests with no reward (like the counter quest for the Galileo questline)

And some of what has been done:

  • Right side boost hover text no longer disappears after opening the quest overview
  • Tooltip no longer covers the reward in counter quests
  • Some players were losing their event tab after having the game running in the background and then switching back. This should no longer happen
  • New quests are now correctly pushed upon completion of prior quest
  • Treasure Hunt and Collect All no longer overlap the quest overview
  • Random or Hidden reward quests now correctly display the reward on completion
  • The UI no longer freezes while switching tabs with the quest overview open
  • Quest texts now correctly fit in the dialogue box

That's all for now, thanks all.
