Dear Queens and Kings,

We've got a new feature we'd like to start testing and getting feedback about :). It will be activated for all players here on Beta in 2 days, on Thursday the 17th of August. Starting at the time of this announcement, it will be activated only for some early game players, while we check our staged rollout functionality.

A new feature is coming your way! We proudly present: Daily Challenges

Functionality
You will find the Daily Challenges inside the new Quest Overview window. Every day starting at 8 AM you will be offered a choice between two chests. What is in the chest will change from day to day. Here's an example choice:

You can see what can be possibly found in both of them, and you can choose the one that is more appealing to you. Once you've made your choice, a new mysterious quest giver - The Nameless - will present you with a challenge which, unlike quests, may have up to five success conditions. They may be a lot more challenging than what you're used to at times, but they also offer a chance to get better rewards than the regular quests:

You then have until the next day, 8 AM, to complete his (or maybe her?) requests and get a reward from the chest. The chests can contain the standard resources, Forge Points, medals, blueprints, special buildings (including ones from sets) and other items.

If you manage to complete seven daily challenges in a row, with no break in between (we warn you: this will not be easy! :)), The Nameless will recognize your efforts and grant you an additional chest containing one of the most desirable rewards!

Reasoning
The daily challenges are supposed to provide clear and challenging goals for your daily playing that you'll be interested in achieving (so we hope).

To go a bit more into the main parts of that statement:
By "challenging goals" we mean that these are not easy challenges. They'll require quite a bit of effort, and optimized play. For example, you'll frequently want to use the boosts from the Friends Tavern. Also, there are sometimes different paths towards achieving something (like "win x battles in a row"), and you'll need to pick the path that you think is best. There could also be days that you choose to not pursue the daily challenge, because you don't have the time or resources.

By "interested in achieving" we mean that we've tried to construct the challenges in a way that they're not impossible to achieve (since that'd be pretty demotivating!), and we've also taken care to put in interesting rewards.

Closing
Besides the testing of the functionality, as usual we're also interested in testing the balancing. Actually, we're especially interested in testing the balancing with you this time. The development team has of course been testing the challenges, and we've simulated various scenarios, but we're looking forward to having it get played by all of you!

Just a quick update on the first important change that was done based on your feedback:
If the morning update takes place as planned (that is - if no new blocking problems are discovered before then), the overall challenge progress counter (the "X/7" one) will no longer reset completely when you don't manage to complete a challenge, or choose to skip one.
Instead, the progress will go down by a single point for each day you either fail a challenge or do not do the challenge. So for example if your progress is 5/7 and you fail or miss the daily challenge for 2 days in a row, your progress will be 3/7.

We hope that this will significantly improve the "success rate" and thus your overall Daily Challenges satisfaction :).

If - for any reason - the morning update can not take place as planned, the change will be introduced on Friday instead.

I want to give you all another update on Daily Challenges.

First, let me say thank you for all your comments and feedback! It has been very helpful :)

Before we get to the list of changes, some quick notes:

  • As said in the announcement, we want to avoid impossible-to-complete scenarios. Your feedback has been very helpful with this.
  • Challenges and conditions will not always be comparable from player to player, since some conditions are adjusted based on game progress, and others have checks in place for avoiding impossible scenarios. For example: if it would require you to wait 2 days to scout a new province, you won't get a daily challenge about conquering sectors.

On Monday, we will introduce this set of adjustments, based on your feedback:

  • "Research technology" was removed from the condition pool, because there were too many scenarios where it wouldn't be feasible in a day. (Example: Promethium production)
  • "Win negotiation on first try" was removed from the condition pool, because it mostly seemed to lead to frustration.
  • We also improved all expedition-related challenges. Both timing and specific requirements will be more tailored to your individual progress.
  • The challenge asking you to solve other quests was sometimes too hard. We kept the challenge, but reduced amount of quests it will ask you to complete.
  • Tavern-related challenges could sometimes be too demanding, leading you to getting stuck because of other people's actions, or lack thereof. These types of challenge conditions will now be much more achievable.
  • Some challenges asked to do multiple 5 and 15 minutes productions. We reduced the amount of productions to do.
  • The defensive boost chest has been removed from the rewards pool.
  • "7 challenges" chest: More Forge Points were added to the Forge Point reward. Boost crates were removed as a reward. "Store building" item was added.
  • 5 new possible chests were added to the rewards pool, including a Summer Event-centric chest.

Greetings Beta,

We tackled most of the feedback raised about DC so far, but didn't yet address the concern about the 8AM server time start time for Daily Challenges. We saw concern from players who have their logins restricted to certain parts of the day, reducing the amount of time available to solve a Challenge. There's also a potential issue with time-zones for language-versions serving large geographical regions.
There's also another issue on our minds: if you login to the game at 7:30 AM, you may feel the need to wait and only begin your in-game actions after the Daily Challenge has begun and you know what it wants you to do. This is something that we really don't want.

So currently we're looking into the possibilities of introducing a setting where each player can decide what is the best Daily Challenge start time for themselves.
The way we think it could work is that you could change the start time to an hour of your choice. This change would apply from the next day on (with the next day being understood as "from midnight on").

Please let us know what you think. Do you believe that this would solve the stated issues? Can you foresee any troubles or possible edge cases that you think should be covered?
