When ranged units fire their weapons, they always shoot at the same direction; no matter where the enemy is.
I mean if your ranged is in the up in the map, then your enemy is in the down of the map. Then your ranged shoots forward and the enemy will get hurt.
I suggest that you have to aim your (e.g.ballista)ranged towards the enemy. Because it is always shooting forwards or backwards.
