Reason
This will allow the game to really be about 'ages, empires and civilizations' again, instead of space science fiction.
Details
What about we develop time traveling technology. We are then tasked with going back in time to various ancient empires to 'repair the timelines'.
Seeing classic ages/civilizations that we did not have before could be fun and we'll visit them 'from the future's perspective'.
Balance
The ages can continue, without having to 'invent' a new futuristic age every time. They don't even necessarily need to be in chronological order because we'd be 'travelling around time' every time a new age arrives.

Summary
Time travel for future ages: Seeing classic ages/civilizations 'from the future's perspective'.
Have you looked to see if this has already been suggested?

We are "time traveling" already to old/classic civilizations with the Cultural Settlements: Vikings, Feudal Japan, Ancient Egypt, and recently Aztecs. Setting a new era to time travel to (for example) China under an Ancient dynasty may clash with plans for a future Cultural Settlement.
