Connect buildings

When a building is located next to another well, the option to link the two buildings. What is not clear to me is, how a building? Do I need to research something? If you can put a better image for more understanding. :D

you have to make sure every building is somehow connected to the road, else it won't function like it should.

What that little symbol means is this in simple terms.... every building you build, needs to be next to a road, which in turn MUST lead to your town hall.
