A reflection on recent questline and event feedback

Hi all,

We've seen some concerns pop up in the feedback to recent questlines, and figured that now was a good time to reach out and address those concerns by sharing some of our current thoughts and plans on that subject. Many of the concerns raised seem to have existed for a longer time, but have grown in intensity because of the increased amount of questlines there have been for the last year.

Our main thought is simple: we want events to be positive and rewarding gameplay experiences that are available to all players.

Concerns
"These quests are incompatible with how I want to play the game"

Some effort should and will always be involved in questlines. It's not fun to complete 10x a "gather 10 coins" quest - that would provide very little gameplay value. This will mean that there will sometimes be quests that are outside of your usual comfort zone :). It also happens that not all players equally enjoy each type of quest.

On the other hand, we've gotten to the stage where we're reading feedback from some players on the forums that can't play the questlines because of how incompatible certain quest requirements are with their style of play. An example is quest conditions to research new technologies. For players with very specific goals in mind that they want to accomplish in their current age, this can be a quite limiting condition. This doesn't fit with our idea of having questlines being available to all players.

→ We've heard and understood that feedback, and will try out including alternatives for that type of quest condition. Both the Arthur Conan Doyle questline that recently finished here on Beta, and the upcoming questline about Shah Jahan include alternatives for researching technologies. We'll see how this goes!

"Impossible to complete"
Similar to the previous point - we do expect quests to be challenging. We do also see some areas to improve here. A notable example are the scouting times in later ages, especially Oceanic Future. It can seriously cut into the playing experience if you have to wait 3 days for a scout to finish, especially if it's a surprise condition later in a questline and you've only got a short time remaining.

→ We'll reduce some of the times required for scouting, more details will follow in a daily update changelog.

"Not making progress in normal game, to be prepared for the next questline"
We're very much on board with the concern here. We don't want there to be "mistakes" you can make in normal gameplay that will significantly hamper your ability to participate in events and questlines. That's not the type of uncertainty we want players to have when playing, and it can be a quite negative experience when you for example have just finished a technology costing hundreds of Forge Points and then you get a quest for researching a technology. There are two things we're working on regarding this:

  • Differently balanced quest conditions depending on your game progress
  • New types of quest conditions
Both of these will allow some more variety in the quest conditions, allowing us to rely less on some of the standard conditions.

→ We're gradually rolling out these changes for conditions - you'll probably see one or two conditions you haven't seen before in coming questlines.

"There are too many events and historical questlines"
We have the impression that this bit of feedback is mainly a result of the concerns individually discussed above. If there is cause for discontent during a questline, then more questlines could cause more discontent.

→ When we address the individual issues above, we think that this resulting concern will also be addressed.

Closing
That's it for now! Thanks for the feedback so far, and please continue to let us know what you think :). If you have any specific comments about this particular announcement, it'd be great if you could do so here.
